Description
Practice rigid transformations on the coordinate plane with this Halloween transformations activity! Students ‘carve pumpkins’ by rotating, translating, and reflecting figures to create the face! Includes 8 Jack-O’-Lantern Transformations Designs that can be graphed on one of 6 Blank Pumpkin Coordinate Planes. This allows for 48 possible combinations!
Students will choose one blank coordinate plane pumpkin and one set of design instructions. Each set of the 8 design instructions can be used with any of the 6 blank coordinate plane pumpkins. The design instructions will direct students to translate, rotate, or reflect figures on the coordinate plane to create their Jack-O’-Lantern design. Students will then cut and color their pumpkins.
An answer key with all 8 designs is provided.
Each Jack-O’-Lantern Design includes one of each type of transformation listed below. Students should be familiar with these before completing this activity.
- Translations: Translations to the left or right
- Rotations: 90° Clockwise, 90° Counterclockwise, or 180°
- Reflections: Across the x or y-axis
Finished Jack-O’-Lanterns make great classroom decor! Pumpkins can be hung on walls, ceilings, or bulletin boards.
