Description

Perfect transformations geometry Christmas math or winter math activity that can also be used as classroom decor! Designs incorporate translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations. Includes 8 Blank Coordinate Plane Ornaments and 8 Ornament Designs that can be mixed and matched for 64 possible ornaments.

Students will choose one blank coordinate plane ornament and one set of design instructions. Each set of design instructions can be used with any of the 8 blank coordinate plane ornaments. The design instructions will direct students to translate, rotate, reflect, or dilate figures on the coordinate plane to create a design for their ornament. Students will then cut and color their ornament.

Answer Key with all 8 designs is provided.

To complete this activity, students should know how to perform the following transformations:

• Translations – Up, Down, Right, or Left
• Reflections – Over the x or y axes
• Rotations – 90° clockwise, 90° counterclockwise, and 180°
• Dilations – Using a scale factor to enlarge or reduce a figure

Classroom Decor Ideas:

• A hole can be punched through the loop at the top of the ornament so they can be hung from the ceiling.
• Create a large tree using green butcher paper so that students can ‘hang’ their ornaments on the tree when finished.
• Hang ornaments on a bulletin board for hallway decor.
