Description

This financial literacy lesson teaches students basic money management skills, including using a spending log (similar to a check register), paying bills, and writing checks!

The lesson and activity will teach students the importance of responsibly tracking their spending to maintain their budget. As students complete the spending log, they will also practice classifying purchases as wants vs. needs, learn how to write a check, and learn how to pay a bill using a debit card on a bill pay stub.

The lesson includes Google Slides and a guided notes worksheet where you will lead students through a discussion of wants vs. needs, a sample spending log, a sample check, and a sample bill stub to be paid using a credit card.

Students will then complete a Spending Log Activity that requires students to record 15 transactions provided on ‘expense cards’ on a spending log. Some transactions require students to write checks or fill out a bill pay stub.

The 15 included Expense Cards are provided in two formats:

  • Small Task Card Format: Cards can be printed as small task cards that students can use while filling out their Spending Log.
  • Large Full Page Format: One set of cards can be hung on the walls around your classroom and students can rotate around the room and fill out their Spending Log as they move. Cards can be used in any order.
