Description
These consumer math and financial literacy resources will give your students the opportunity to practice applying math skills in a real-world context. Topics include discounts and coupons, sales tax, tips, comparison shopping using unit prices, and more.
Keep students engaged with a variety of lessons and activities, including Google Slides presentations, guided notes, partner practice, a bingo game, a puzzle, scenario tasks, and more! Also includes a study guide and quiz to assess students’ knowledge at the end of the unit.
The lessons in this unit will take approximately 12 – 16 one-hour class periods.
This bundle includes:
- Understanding Discounts & Coupons – Teach students about types of discounts and how to calculate them. Includes Google Slides, guided notes, and a self-checking practice worksheet.
- Discounts & Coupons BINGO Game – This whole-class BINGO game provides extra practice calculating discounts. It includes 40 unique bingo cards and 35 questions on Google Slides.
- Understanding Sales Tax – Teach students about the basics of sales tax, including who collects it, what it’s used for, and how to calculate it. Includes Google Slides, guided notes, and a self-checking math maze.
- Classroom Thrift Store Activity – This engaging activity will turn your classroom into a thrift store for a day. Students will rotate through tasks that require them to calculate totals, sales tax, discounts, and more.
- The Cost of Dining Out Activity – Students will use real restaurant menus to complete four independent tasks that help them understand the costs associated with dining out.
- Tax, Tip, & Discount Math Practice Puzzle – This engaging, self-checking puzzle provides your students with extra practice calculating taxes, tips, and discounts.
- Comparison Shopping using Unit Prices – This lesson will teach students the benefits of comparison shopping, how to calculate a unit price, and how to use unit prices to determine the better buy. Includes Google Slides, guided notes, and a partner practice activity.
- Shopping for a Cookout Activity – Students will use grocery store websites to shop for items needed for a cookout. They’ll calculate unit prices and use them to determine the best items to buy. Also includes alternative versions for a spaghetti dinner, taco dinner, and pancake breakfast.
- BONUS FILE – Consumer Math Skills Study Guide – This study guide can be used as a unit review before the quiz.
- BONUS FILE – Consumer Math Skills Quiz – This quiz can be used after completing the lessons to assess students’ knowledge. A paper version and a Google Forms version are both included. Answer key and Bundle Pacing Guide are also included in the Bonus File.
