Eye-opening, easy prep personal finance project where students will learn the actual cost of raising a child for one year. Students will learn real-world math skills by researching the costs of essential baby supplies, as well as calculating how many diapers and ounces of formula a baby will use in a year. Students will also draw a ‘chance’ card that may increase or decrease their overall cost. Great lesson for math, economics, family and consumer sciences, child development classes, and more.

Students will start by drawing a Gender Reveal Card to learn if they’re having a boy, girl, or twins! They’ll then answer questions on a worksheet that guides them through calculating the number of diapers and ounces of formula a baby will use in a year, as well as medical expenses associated with having a baby. They will then complete a spreadsheet that prompts them to look up the costs of common essential baby supplies. The activity concludes with students drawing a ‘chance’ card that may increase or decrease their total! Examples can be seen in the preview.
